  Security Environment

The Indian security market is witnessing a burgeoning change. Everybody today recognizes the fact that security pays in terms of reducing losses against theft, espionage, vandalism and terrorism.

The recent terrorist attacks have significantly influenced the way we all view the idea of adequate levels of security. The attack has made security managers, architects, engineers and specifiers aware of vulnerability to terrorists in average commercial settings.

Individual security is also sticking out its head. Dependence on individual sophisticated security based electronics is developing into a major niche market. But an even more likely and surely is the more common threat from sabotage or theft by employees or professional thieves.

In light of such threats security awareness is growing at a tremendous pace. Budgets are being set aside and more emphasis being laid on the provision and up-gradation of the protection measures.

On the physical security systems front, though indigenous systems are being developed, it is still a long way to match developed country standards. Thus, the electronic security industry remains largely imported.

The Indian protection market today is estimated close to US $500 million. It is expected to grow at a rate of more than 30%, enviably unaffected by the slowdown of the world markets. In the Asian context this represents a sizeable chunk.

The huge private manned guarding sector estimated to comprise of more than 10000 guard companies employing more than 1 Million people remains unregulated.

A mammoth task facing industry associations is the development of operating standards and guidelines within the protection industry in India.
